Coaching has been around since time began. In the earliest day the older tribesmen would have taught the younger generation how to hunt, cook, paint pictures on the walls of caves, generally nurturing them to be useful and effective members of their communities. This type of practical coaching still continues in most societies today. Now a more sophisticated form of coaching exists and has done so within the sports industry for many years. Tim Gallwey’s book “The Inner Game of Tennis” in 1974 referred to a more psychological approach to achieve peak performance. He stated that the opponent in one’s head was far greater than the one on the other side of the net.
In the 1990s, experts such as Stephen Covey and Antony Robbins stirred up an interest for personal development and awareness.
Since the global economic downturn, many businesses have had no option but to downsize, but this has left managers and leaders working in highly stressful environments with little or no support. The requirement for performance maximisation has contributed to the increased requirement in coaching.
Coaching is used as a method of unlocking your potential and enables you to make conscious decisions about yourself, giving you the freedom to become great leaders of your own lives.
Coaching will push you out of your comfort zone and stretch your capability, whilst removing barriers and limiting beliefs. This is achieved by setting new goals and tasks which, when completed, will aid your neurology to develop further so that you no longer feel out of your comfort zone. Once the neurology is sufficiently developed, you will respond more positively to change in any aspect of your life.
A coaching session will allow the coach opportunities to ask questions which will challenge you giving you the opportunity to discover answers and explore options for yourself to unlock your potential.
The GROW model is used in goal setting:
G Understand what the Goal is for the session, as well as short and long term.
R Reality check allows consideration of the current circumstances.
O Options and alternative strategies for courses of action.
W What action will be taken, When, by Who and explore the Will to drive it forward.
